Job Summary

The intern will be coached and closely supervised by the Child Protection Officer (NOB) with support from the Child & Social Protection Officer at the UNICEF Accra Office. The intern will work in close collaboration with the Social Protection, Monitoring & Evaluation, and Communication teams. At the end of the internship, the intern and supervisor must complete the respective internship evaluation forms.

Job Description/Requirements

Key Activities Will Be

The national intern will support the child protection team in Accra in developing communications, advocacy and training materials for Social Service providers in Ghana.

  • Help produce ISS communication materials such as human-interest stories and photo stories from ISS districts. This includes working with the ISS in districts to collect, follow-up on, edit, and design stories before they are approved and published by the UNICEF Communications team.
  • Support in monthly quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis from ISS districts and sectors.
  • Carrying out data cleaning from district reports to the improve quality of data.
  • Support the synthesis and design of ISS data from reports for purposes of communication and advocacy for various audiences
  • Support the scripting and production of multimedia content including video tutorials, flyers and one-pagers on various tools and frameworks such as inter alia the Intersectoral Standard Operating Procedures for Child Protection and Family Welfare (ISSOPs) and the Social Welfare Information Management System (SWIMS)
  • Support dissemination of communications and training materials with various stakeholders on a regular basis
  • Support logistical arrangements and documentation of ISS capacity-building and stakeholders’ workshops
  • Observe and support in-field monitoring and coaching activities as required

Expected Deliverables

  • Production of Human Interest Stories and Photo Stories on various aspects of the ISS
  • Design short briefs based on ISS mid-term review report
  • Compilation of ISS Activity Reports from 2021 and 2022


Supervision and Reporting Arrangement


The intern will be coached and closely supervised by the Child Protection Officer (NOB) with support from the Child & Social Protection Officer at the UNICEF Accra Office. The intern will work in close collaboration with the Social Protection, Monitoring & Evaluation, and Communication teams. At the end of the internship, the intern and supervisor must complete the respective internship evaluation forms.


Payment and Payment Schedule

The Intern will receive monthly stipend as per Ghana Country Office internal guideline. This amount will be pro-rated accordingly for any uncompleted month of work.

Note: This is not applicable for interns receiving stipends from governmental or non-governmental bodies (including private sector) whether recruited from outside the duty station or not. UNICEF office should pay the difference between UNICEF’s stipend and the amount provided by external institutions if UNICEF’s stipend is more.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Proof of enrolment in an undergraduate, graduate or advanced programme in a Reference letter from school confirming student requires internship OR an up-to date university transcript or Statement of result/certificate evidencing completion of a degree within the last two years (if applicable).
  • Academic background in Social Sciences, particularly Sociology, Social Work, Human Rights, Gender Studies, Public Policy, Mass Communications or related areas.
  • Previous experience in storytelling and producing engaging written accounts/narratives on sensitive issues.
  • Previous experience in undertaking communications and advocacy activities on social issues related to children and/or gender-based violence will be considered an asset
  • Previous experience or skills in multimedia production such as infographic design, videography, photography and use of relevant editing software (e.g., FCP, Premiere Pro, Illustrator, etc.) will be considered a strong asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) and/or local language(s) is an asset.
  • Experience working in rural Ghana, and knowledge of development landscape in the country or in similar context acceptable.
