Maintenance General Foreman
Job summary
Intermine Procurement and Logistics Ltd is seeking an experienced, safety-focused, and results-driven Maintenance General Foreman (Management) – Caterpillar Equipment to lead maintenance operations for the Caterpillar (CAT) heavy mining fleet including mining trucks (e.g. the 785), excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, and motor graders.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Maintenance Planning & Execution
- Lead and coordinate all maintenance activities for the Caterpillar mining fleet, including haul trucks, excavators, dozers, wheel loaders, motor graders, and support equipment.
- Develop and execute daily, weekly, monthly, annual, and shutdown maintenance plans to achieve fleet availability targets.
- Coordinate preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance activities.
- Ensure maintenance work is completed according to Caterpillar OEM standards, maintenance procedures, and site requirements.
- Monitor maintenance backlog and establish recovery plans to minimize operational impact.
Fleet Reliability & Equipment Availability
- Drive equipment reliability and maximize fleet availability across all Caterpillar equipment.
- Lead troubleshooting and technical diagnosis of major equipment failures using Caterpillar diagnostic systems including CAT ET and CAT SIS.
- Conduct Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) for recurring failures and major component breakdowns.
- Develop and implement corrective actions to reduce equipment downtime and improve reliability.
- Monitor fleet performance indicators including Availability, Reliability, MTBF, MTTR, PM Compliance, and Breakdown Frequency.
Caterpillar Fleet Maintenance Supervision
- Supervise maintenance execution for Caterpillar mining trucks, excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, graders, and auxiliary equipment.
- Ensure compliance with Caterpillar OEM maintenance standards and recommended repair procedures.
- Oversee major component replacement programs including engines, transmissions, differentials, final drives, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Support equipment inspections, rebuild programs, machine health monitoring, and condition-based maintenance activities.
- Review and approve technical recommendations and maintenance strategies.
Resource Coordination & Workshop Management
- Coordinate manpower, maintenance equipment, contractors, workshop resources, and field support activities.
- Ensure effective allocation of technicians and supervisors to meet operational priorities.
- Work closely with Warehouse and Procurement teams to ensure timely availability of spare parts and critical components.
- Manage workshop productivity, maintenance scheduling, and resource utilization.
- Ensure workshop facilities maintain high housekeeping and operational standards.
Safety, Health, Environment & Compliance
- Enforce compliance with all mining regulations, client requirements, and company HSE standards.
- Ensure strict adherence to LOTO procedures, Permit-to-Work systems, equipment isolation requirements, and risk assessments.
- Conduct toolbox talks, workplace inspections, and safety audits.
- Participate in incident investigations and implementation of corrective actions.
- Promote a proactive safety culture throughout the maintenance department.
Quality Assurance & Maintenance Governance
- Verify maintenance quality and ensure all work meets Caterpillar OEM specifications.
- Conduct maintenance audits and equipment inspections.
- Approve equipment readiness before return to operation.
- Ensure proper maintenance documentation, equipment history records, and work order management.
- Promote maintenance best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
Cost Control & Operational Efficiency
- Monitor maintenance expenditure and support cost optimization initiatives.
- Control spare parts consumption, labour productivity, contractor costs, and downtime-related losses.
- Support maintenance budgeting, forecasting, and lifecycle cost management.
- Promote repair-and-reuse programs where technically feasible.
- Drive initiatives aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing maintenance costs.
Leadership, Training & Performance Management
- Lead Supervisors, Team Leaders, Technicians, and contractor personnel.
- Conduct performance reviews, workforce planning, and succession development activities.
- Identify training requirements and support technical development programs.
- Mentor and coach maintenance personnel to improve technical competency and performance.
- Promote accountability, discipline, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Stakeholder Management & Reporting
- Liaise with Operations, Production, Engineering, Client Representatives, Procurement, Warehouse Teams, and Caterpillar OEM Technical Support.
- Provide technical support during major maintenance and operational challenges.
- Prepare periodic reports covering fleet performance, equipment downtime, maintenance activities, safety performance, and maintenance costs.
- Present maintenance performance reviews and improvement recommendations to management.
- Support achievement of production and business objectives through effective maintenance leadership.
Qualification & ExperienceEducation
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Master’s Degree in a relevant engineering field will be an added advantage.
Professional Certification
- Valid MinCom Inspectorate Certification relevant to mining maintenance operations.
- Caterpillar OEM Technical Training and Certifications will be a significant advantage.
- Reliability, Maintenance Management, or Supervisory certifications will be an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Caterpillar fleet maintenance within open-pit mining operations.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Maintenance Manager, General Foreman, Workshop Manager, or equivalent leadership role.
- Demonstrated experience managing large maintenance teams and Caterpillar fleet maintenance operations.
Other Requirements
- Valid Ghanaian Driver’s License.
- Proficiency in CAT ET, CAT SIS, maintenance management systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a mining operational environment.
