Role PurposeThe Database Administrator plays a pivotal role in managing and optimizing Oracle, MS SQL, and other database platforms across Telecel Ghana. This position ensures the reliability, performance, and security of critical database systems through proactive operations, strategic planning, and technical leadership.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for database environments, including servers, local services, data center infrastructure, and system configurations.
- Lead day-to-day database operations to meet business and IT service delivery requirements.
- Deliver expert consultation on database design, development, and integration for major IT projects and enterprise initiatives.
- Develop business cases, cost-benefit analyses, and financial justifications for database-related investments and upgrades.
- Manage the complete lifecycle of database systems—from deployment and monitoring to maintenance, upgrades, and support.
- Investigate and resolve escalated database incidents, ensuring timely resolution and efficient use of resources.
- Review and validate the work of junior team members on large-scale projects for quality, accuracy, and compliance.
- Establish, maintain, and communicate database standards, best practices, and architectural frameworks across distributed environments.
- Oversee scheduled maintenance, patching, and upgrades across database platforms to ensure system stability and security.
- Collaborate with vendors to align technical roadmaps with Telecel’s Long-Range Planning (LRP), in coordination with the Head of Infrastructure, Head of Architecture & Strategy, and CIO.
- Prepare and deliver quarterly performance reports on the database estate to the CIO and IT leadership team.
- Support backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes to ensure data integrity and business continuity.
Requirements
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or a related technical field (preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in database administration, including 2 years in a technical management or supervisory capacity.
- 2–3 years of hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database administration and support.
- 2–3 years of experience implementing and managing database clustering technologies.
- 2–3 years of experience utilizing Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (SMART) for database system health and performance monitoring.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated capacity to follow direction from senior leadership while contributing proactively to team and organizational success.
