Job summary
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for the effective preparation, maintenance and supervision of Physics, Chemistry and Biology laboratories. The role ensures that all practical sessions run smoothly, safely and efficiently while maintaining laboratory equipment, materials, and facilities in good working condition.
Job descriptions & requirements
- Prepare apparatus, chemicals, specimens and instructional materials for Physics, Chemistry and Biology practical sessions.
- Set up experiments according to teachers’ instructions before each class.
- Test experimental setups in advance to ensure functionality and safety.
- Assist teachers during practical sessions when required.
- Ensure all laboratories are clean, organized, and safe at all times.
- Maintain proper arrangement and labeling of equipment, chemicals, and specimens.
- Regularly inspect laboratory facilities including gas taps, sinks, electrical connections, and storage units.
- Report any damages, faults, or safety hazards promptly to school authorities.
- Keep an updated inventory of all laboratory equipment, chemicals, and materials.
- Ensure all apparatus are present, properly stored, and in good working condition.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
- Recommend replacement or procurement of damaged, expired, or missing items.
- Prevent loss or misuse of laboratory equipment and materials.
- Enforce laboratory safety rules and regulations.
- Ensure availability and proper functioning of safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, eye wash stations, gloves, and lab coats.
- Properly store chemicals according to safety guidelines.
- Ensure safe disposal of chemical and biological waste.
- Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals.
- Maintain detailed records of:
- Equipment inventory
- Chemical usage
- Breakages and damages
- Repairs and maintenance activities
- Keep attendance records for laboratory usage where required.
- Assist in preparing laboratory budgets and requisitions.
- Prepare laboratory setups for internal and external practical examinations.
- Verify availability of all required materials before examinations commence.
- Monitor stock levels of chemicals and consumables.
- Prepare purchase requests when supplies are low.
- Receive, verify, and properly store newly supplied equipment and materials.
- Support science teachers in improving practical teaching methods.
- Ensure laboratories remain conducive for teaching and learning.
- Would prefer a Candidate with not less than 3 years of school laboratory experience.
- A minimum of an HND academic qualification
