Business Development Manager

As part of the launch of its operations in Ghana, an international trading company specialised in the import/export of agricultural commodities (soya, wheat, wheat bran) to West African markets, is recruiting a Business Development Manager to grow its market share in agricultural commodities (soya, wheat, wheat bran), identify new buyers and build the company's strategic commercial partnerships from day one.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Development & Prospecting
- Identify and prospect new buyers of agricultural commodities in Ghana and West Africa (distributors, animal feed manufacturers, agri-food industrials, wholesalers)
- Develop and maintain an active client portfolio across soya, wheat and wheat bran products
- Negotiate sales contracts (price, volumes, Incoterms, payment terms, delivery timelines)
- Monitor contract execution in coordination with Supply Chain and Finance teams
Market Analysis & Intelligence
- Monitor international commodity prices (Chicago Board of Trade, regional markets) and local consumption trends in Ghana and West Africa
- Analyse local and international competition in soya, wheat and cereal by-product markets
- Identify arbitrage opportunities and favourable import market windows
- Produce market notes and recommendations for Management to guide buying/selling strategy
Partnerships & Representation
- Develop partnerships with Ghanaian institutional players, professional agricultural organisations (GFAG, GNAFF) and chambers of commerce
- Represent the company at trade fairs, sector events and business meetings in Ghana and the sub-region
- Coordinate with international suppliers and traders to anticipate sourcing needs based on local demand
Commercial Reporting
- Track and analyse commercial KPIs (volumes sold, revenue, gross margin per product, client renewal rate)
- Produce regular commercial reports for General Management and headquarters
CANDIDATE PROFILE
- Education: Bachelor's / Master's in International Business, Agri-food, Economics or Business Administration
- Experience: Minimum 5 years in international agricultural commodity trading or import/export, with strong knowledge of the Ghanaian and West African markets
- Established network among key players in the Ghanaian agri-food and distribution sector (flour millers, feed millers, distributors)
- Good understanding of agricultural commodity pricing mechanisms and Incoterms
- Excellent negotiation, communication and cross-cultural skills
- Autonomous, entrepreneurial mindset with a strong results orientation
- Fluent English required; knowledge of local languages (Twi, Hausa) an asset
KEY COMPETENCIES
