Job descriptions & requirements

Company Overview

Stratcon Energy & Trading is a fast-growing Ghanaian energy company operating across petroleum trading, supply and distribution. With an international outlook and a growing presence across Ghana, we connect global energy markets with local demand, delivering reliable energy solutions to businesses and industries. With offices in Dubai, U.A.E and Accra, Ghana, Stratcon is in the process of creating a robust downstream petroleum distribution company designed to offer the best in optionality and efficiency to our counter-parties.

Role Overview

The Company Treasurer & Head of Trade Finance directs corporate liquidity, capital structure, banking relationships, and financial risk while managing the end-to-end execution of trade finance instruments. This role ensures seamless financing and settlement for bulk physical petroleum import, export, and distribution operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Trade Finance & Structured Facilities

  • Structure, issue, and manage Letters of Credit (Sight, Usance, Standby LCs, Back-to-Back LCs, and Transferable LCs) for cargo purchases and sales.

  • Oversee trade instrument compliance under UCP 600, ISBP, and URC 522 rules, ensuring zero-discrepancy document presentations (Bills of Lading, Certificates of Quality/Quantity, Invoices).

  • Negotiate and secure bilateral trade finance facilities, revolving credit facilities (RCFs), borrowing base facilities, and inventory financing lines with commercial and international banks.

  • Coordinate with operations and chartering teams to align cargo discharge, laycan timelines, and title transfers with LC drawing terms and payment releases.

  • Administer Collateral Management Agreements (CMAs), Stock Monitoring Agreements (SMAs), and tripartite agreements for wet-stock inventory financing.

2. Liquidity & Cash Management

  • Maintain real-time multi-currency cash flow models and rolling forecasts across trading operations, margin calls, and debt obligations.

  • Optimize corporate working capital, ensuring timely funding of operational accounts, escrow balances, and supplier settlements.

  • Manage daily banking operations, pooling structures, sweeps, and high-value inter-bank transfers.

3. Financial Risk & Hedging

  • Manage FX exposure arising from multi-currency oil purchases (USD/EUR) versus local currency sales; execute spot, forward, and swap contracts.

  • Collaborate with the trading and derivatives desk to align treasury liquidity with derivative margin requirements (variation margin and initial margin funding).

  • Implement counterparty credit risk frameworks, setting exposure limits for off-takers, charterers, and banking partners.

4. Banking & Stakeholder Relationships

  • Serve as the primary liaison to commercial lenders, trade finance syndicates, non-bank financiers, and credit insurers.

  • Lead annual credit reviews, facility renewal pitches, and compliance reporting for debt covenants.

  • Partner with tax, legal, and external audit teams to ensure compliance with central bank regulations, capital controls, and trade reporting standards.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related discipline. Professional certification (ACT, CTP, CFA, CA/ACCA, or CDCS) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: 8–12+ years of progressive treasury experience, with at least 5 years specifically within physical commodities trading (downstream/midstream petroleum, energy, or bulk materials).
  • Technical Mastery: Deep operational knowledge of trade finance mechanics (LCs, documentary collections, discounting, avalized drafts) and structured trade credit insurance.
  • Banking Network: Proven track record of managing and expanding lending limits across local and regional commercial banks.
  • Systems: Proficiency with Treasury Management Systems (TMS), ERP platforms, and trade finance portal software.
