Job summary

We are seeking a talented and detail-oriented Graphics & Book Designer to join our creative team. This role is central to the production of high-quality educational and commercial publications, with a strong focus on textbook design, academic layouts, and visually compelling print materials. The ideal candidate is passionate about typography, page architecture, and bringing content to life through thoughtful, purposeful design.

Job descriptions & requirements

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and layout textbooks, workbooks, manuals, and other educational publications from concept to print-ready files
  • Create visually engaging page layouts adhering to established style guides and brand standards
  • Typeset and format body text, headings, tables, figures, and captions with precision
  • Develop custom illustrations, icons, infographics, and diagrams to support educational content
  • Collaborate with authors, editors, and project managers throughout the design and review process
  • Prepare and manage press-ready files, including colour profiles, bleed settings, and print specifications
  • Design cover artwork and marketing materials for book titles
  • Ensure consistency of design elements across multi-volume series and product lines
  • Revise layouts based on editorial and client feedback within agreed timelines
  • Maintain organised file archives and version control for all design assets

Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a related field
  • Minimum 2–4 years of professional experience in book, publication, or editorial design
  • Demonstrable portfolio of published textbooks, educational materials, or long-form print publications
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign — including master pages, paragraph styles, object styles, GREP, and data merge
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
  • Experience with colour management, ICC profiles, and preparing files for commercial printing
  • Familiarity with PDF/X standards and preflight processes
  • Understanding of EPUB and digital publishing workflows is a plus
  • Excellent typographic skills with a keen eye for hierarchy, readability, and white space
  • Strong understanding of grid systems, modular layout design, and visual flow
  • Ability to interpret briefs and translate complex academic content into clear, accessible designs
  • Attention to detail — especially in the consistency of styles across long manuscripts

Preferred / Advantageous Skills
  • Experience with curriculum-aligned or K-12 educational publishing
  • Knowledge of InDesign scripting (ExtendScript or UXP) for workflow automation
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards in print and digital publications (WCAG, PDF/UA)
  • Experience using project management tools such as Asana, Trello, or Monday.com
  • Understanding of LaTeX or XML-based workflows
