The Company

Globe 24-7 in partnership with a key multinational mining client are working together to source an experienced and qualified Chief Short-Term Planning Engineer for their site in Ghana - Obuasi mine. This can be a local hire or an expat.


The Role

To build, develop, and lead an effective team capable of delivering industry leading practices within the mine planning & technical support functions in order to achieve business objectives/targets.


The Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely completion of assigned corrective actions and manage risks effectively during task execution.
  • Report incidents, oversee investigations, and confirm corrective actions are completed on time.
  • Lead the short-term planning team to produce accurate mine planning data for operational use.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of annual budgets, forecasts, and production plans (weekly, monthly, and quarterly) that meet site and corporate requirements.
  • Ensure timely month-end reporting in compliance with corporate standards.
  • Develop strategies to support underground operations in meeting mine plans, addressing production shortfalls, and implementing recovery plans.
  • Continuously improve designs (e.g., drill and blast layouts) through review and analysis.
  • Develop KPIs to monitor mining performance, communicate progress, and address challenges.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to achieve production goals and drive continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate mining growth projects as part of life-of-mine planning and oversee strategic planning.
  • Analyze production data to identify improvements and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders through effective communication routines.
  • Deliver mine planning outputs within budget, timelines, and KPIs while providing senior technical leadership to enhance team performance.
  • Recommend improvements for specialist projects and research in mine planning processes.
  • Establish networks to promote initiatives and report on progress, including benefits achieved.
  • Propose solutions for process improvements using defined methodologies to enhance mine planning performance.
  • Anticipate potential issues by implementing statistical controls, better work practices, and skill development for the team.
  • Optimize existing mine planning procedures through problem-solving approaches.
  • Maintain consistent team performance and foster collaboration across functions.
  • Build constructive relationships with internal (e.g., Corporate, sister mines) and external stakeholders (e.g., regulatory agencies) to meet evolving societal and regulatory expectations.


The Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or equivalent.
  • Over 8 years of mine planning and production experience in underground or open-pit mining, with at least 5 years in a senior supervisory role within a planning/technical department.
  • Expertise in managing mine engineering, production scheduling, and underground drill-and-blast techniques.
  • Strong background in contractor management for large-scale underground operations.
  • Proficiency in mine planning software, particularly Deswik or Datamine.
  • Knowledge of various underground mining methods.
  • Advanced understanding of mining processes and their application to optimize performance.
  • Expertise in production management, dispatch systems, surveying, geology, contract management, and drilling/blasting techniques.
  • Skilled in long-term and short-term mine planning systems and practices, as well as mine design optimization.
  • Ability to prepare and act as a competent person for annual mine reserve statements.
  • Knowledge of contracts, deliverables, and processes for successful management, including drafting and analyzing variations for approval.
  • Leadership in building disciplined teams to meet defined standards.
  • Self-management with a focus on personal development.
  • Strong relationship-building skills across teams and functions.
  • High integrity, accountability, and trustworthiness.
  • Problem-solving abilities with a results-driven mindset to maximize performance.
