The Country Accountant is responsible for overseeing and managing the financial operations of the Mercy Ships Ghana office. This includes ensuring accurate accounting practices, compliance with applicable financial regulations, effective budget management, and timely financial reporting in support of organizational objectives.


In addition, the role provides administrative support to facilitate the efficient day-to-day operations of the country office.


Key Responsibilities


Financial Management and Accounting


  • Manage and oversee all accounting functions, including the preparation and maintenance of
  • financial records.
  • Ensure compliance with local financial regulations and international NGO financial standards
  • Daily processing and recording of financial transactions include validating expense coding
  • and in-country spending.
  • Produce monthly reports on the financial status through certify
  • Reconciling banking transactions
  • Preparation and submission of monthly returns to relevant government agencies. Ex. Tax and
  • pension institutions where applicable
  • Prepare mid and year-end financial statements, including the General Ledger (GL), Trial Balance
  • (TB), Profit & Loss (P&L) statement, and Balance Sheet, while ensuring compliance with local
  • financial regulations.
  • Support local banking activities, including processing accounts payable (AP) payments as
  • required and liaising with local banks to ensure smooth financial operations
  • Assist in the development, monitoring, and reporting of the country office budget
  • Prepare for and facilitate external audits, providing necessary documentation and
  • explanations.
  • Address any audit findings and implement recommended changes
  • Have a very good understanding of working in a multicultural context and can demonstrate a
  • high cultural intelligence during interactions
  • Carry out any other duties as may be required by the country director and the ASC
  • finance director.


Administrative and Operational Support


  • Provide administrative support to ensure smooth and efficient office operations.
  • Coordinate meeting logistics, scheduling, and internal communications for the country office.
  • Support procurement processes in line with Mercy Ships policies, including sourcing quotations, processing requests, and tracking purchases.
  • Maintain organized and up-to-date filing systems for both financial and administrative documentation (electronic and physical).
  • Assist in vendor coordination, including maintaining accurate vendor records and supporting contract documentation.
  • Coordinate travel arrangements and logistics for staff and visitors, as required.
  • Monitor office supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and proper inventory management.
  • Support onboarding logistics for new employees, including administrative setup and coordination.
  • Act as a point of contact for general administrative matters within the office.


Collaboration and Organizational Contribution


  • Demonstrate cultural awareness and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders at the country and Africa Service Center levels.
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Country Director and ASC Finance Director.


Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within an international NGO or similar environment.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and budgeting processes.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems and financial tools.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; French is an asset.
  • Demonstrated alignment with Mercy Ships mission, vision, and core values.
