“Life is full of surprises, but the biggest one of all is learning what it takes to handle them.” – Unknown

Are you like Kwame? Have you lost your job as a result of the pandemic? Have you been laid off as a result of downsizing in your company?

Losing a job has never been easy and it can significantly affect your life if, not handled appropriately. It becomes more stressful when it happens in a time like this.

Here is what to do when you lose your job.

1. Accept and Move On

It is surely not a good feeling to wake up in the morning, and your usual routine seem not to be the same anymore. Even if you did not love your job so much, the sudden loss of a job can really get hard at you.

You may initially doubt the fact that you are unemployed, but it is real. Yes, it is very ok to feel bad about this. The sense of doubtfulness, anger, anxiety and future uncertainties can take a toll on your mental well being.

Allow yourself to breathe it out, and accept the situation. You are unemployed, and you need to move on. It can take some time, however, be in charge and encourage yourself and get on with the next phase of your life and career.

2. Invest in Your Personal Development

Sometimes, losing a job may be a sign of redirection. However, a career change should not necessarily be influenced by the trauma of a layoff. Take some time to do an introspection of your career, and the specific industry and look out for the skills sets that employers are looking for. Then do an evaluation of your skills and qualifications and know where you need to upgrade.

You can enroll in specific courses that are related to your industry and become a better version of yourself. In the long run, this will help boost your confidence and enable you to be ready for new opportunities. You will also appeal to employers when they realize your skills set is exactly what they need.

3. Revamp Your CV

At a time like this, make an effort to update and polish up your CV. This is the time to keep being motivated to be ready to seize your next opportunity. And to help you market your competencies is a well-optimized CV. It is imperative that you highlight your experiences, your success stories and relevant skills that match the skills set employers are looking for. Writing a good CV means your Cv should have the capability to market your competencies to your potential employers.

If you’re considering revamping your CV, follow these steps:

  1. Add more information to short sections
  2. Omit irrelevant experience
  3. Align with legible font and avoid stylish fonts
  4. Check all bullet points for accuracy
  5. Avoid grammatical errors
