My NSS Experience That Directed My Career Path

I am Amoako Siaw Addy, a recruiter with Jobberman Ghana. I hold a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Professional Studies, Accra.

I had a rare opportunity to do my national service with Jobberman Ghana after I had an internship with the company for 3 months right after I completed school in 2019.

Interestingly, I was the first person in the history of the company to be posted as a national service person. This was between September 2019 and August 2020.

During my service, I learnt a whole lot of skills, both soft and hard skills. I learnt how to work in a team, improved my communication and presentation skills. I had the opportunity to learn from the sales and recruitment teams.

I learnt how to work collaboratively on the cloud as it is our everyday practice as a digital organization.

One thing that motivated me to keep going was an inspiration I got from my head of sales then, Samuel Ato Inkoom. He said “Either you count the days or you make the days count”. The option was left for me to decide. That will determine if after my service I will be retained or bid farewell.

I had to buckle up and work hard. I did my best, built good relationships, networked with people and by God’s grace I was retained after my service. It was not easy. There were days sales went bad. Some days, I achieved my target and a whole lot of ups and downs.

My national service had an effect on my career path. I wanted to work in an accounting firm or something similar but I found myself doing human resource and recruitment. And here I am working full time as a recruiter and CV specialist here at Jobberman Ghana. The journey has been great and I am enjoying what I do. One key thing I am proud of, is the fact that I have improved on my presentation and selling skills.

My advice to fresh graduates about to do their service is “Either you count the days or you make the days count. It should be a combination of hard work, perseverance and prayers.

Dear national service personel, remember to take it one step at a time and you will surely get there. When you get the opportunity to work in an institution you love make an impact and let your work speak for you.
