Crossing Guard Position
Part-Time Crossing Guard
Purpose Of The Position
The primary responsibility of a school crossing guard is to help children and parents safely cross the street as they walk or bicycle to and from school. Crossing guards provide visibility for pedestrians and remind drivers to slow down and follow traffic laws. They assess the flow of traffic to make informed decisions about when to allow pedestrians to cross. They observe and report any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard to the school children or the guard.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Applies appropriate knowledge of traffic laws and uses clear and proper traffic management signals to both pedestrians and vehicular traffic to safely cross any person within the designated school crossing zones;
Works under the direction of the Chief of Police of the Newtown Township Police Department;
Communicates with the Newtown Township Police Department to report any information, problems, or concerns regarding the school zone where Crossing Guard services are performed;
Ability to deal effectively and courteously with associates, school staff and the general public;
Adheres to safe work practices.
Job Skills & Qualifications Required
High school diploma or equivalent degree
Social perceptiveness and strong eyesight
Keen understanding of local traffic laws and regulations
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of methods and techniques of assisting people across busy streets.
Ability to work independently and in compliance with department policies and procedures.
Physical And Working Environment
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking distances up to 100 feet; standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; use of hands and arms for signaling; ability to lift and carry 10 pounds; ability to pull 100 pounds; ability to see in the normal visual range and hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. Field environment; exposure to heat, cold, moving objects/vehicles, noise, inclement weather conditions; work on slippery or uneven surfaces.
