The Ghana Police service each year opens up applications for recruitment into the service. However, this one is not like any of the other recruitment exercises.
As clearly indicated by the Public Relations Director of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur (As at the time artcle was published, Sept 2016), the purpose of this particular recruitment exercise is to bring more professionals into the service.

Level of Ghana Police Service Recruitment
There are two levels of recruitment into the Ghana Police Service. As a security agent, various spheres of expertise are required to make it effective at executing real-life tasks and solving crime in all areas.
1. Basic Recruitment: Basic recruitment refers to the mass recruitment of men/women above the age of 18 to enforce law and order. Qualification requirement is normally WASSCE. Enlisted persons start as constables, and work their way up.
2. Graduate Recruitment: This level of recruitment is open to graduates with a minimum of a Degree qualification. The aim of the graduate recruitment is to attract professionals from all walks of life into the service.
The service also conducts recruitments geared at artisans and skilled men/women who can provide specialized services to the service. This filtering can fall under any of the two depending on the type of vocation or skillset required.
General Eligibility Requirements for Application
Here are the general eligibility requirement for the recent police recruitment, as appeared on the 5th September 2016, Edition of Daily Graphic, Pages 77.
- You must be a Ghanaian
- Must possess a minimum of a first degree, not below a second class lower from an accredited university, and the relevant professional qualification where it has been specified.
- Must not be 18 years and above and not more than 32 years
- Must be at least 5 feet 8 inches (173cm) tall for Males and 5 feet 4 inches (163cm) for females.
- Must be physically fit by Police Standards
- Must have completed National Service.
Apart from these general eligibility requirements, the Police Service have specified 13 different departments with specialization requirements needed to work in those department. These are:
- General Duties
- Projects Unit
- Transport and Workshop
- Religious Affairs
- Police Medical Services Specialist
- Biomedical Scientist
- Estate Officers
- Public Relations
- Critical Care and theatre Nurses

What Does all These Mean To The Ghana Police Service?
The Ghana Police Service has seen a massive restructure with the appointment of the last few IGPs (Inspector Generals of Police) after the service came under a barrage of public lambasting for unprofessionalism among service members.
Introducing this specialized recruitment is a good thing for the service. With the recruitment of different caliber of professionals into the service, we expect to see more professionalism among Police men, good customer service at Police stations, less corruption, better communication, more active community liaison and engagement, and a generally more efficient and friendlier Police Service.
These professionals will provide good training and oversight to the men on the ground so they can conduct their work according to the laws of the country and know when to respect the rights of the citizenry. Cases of Policemen abusing their rights and using maximum force on the public abound. Hopefully, all these issues will undergo drastic improvement.
