When thinking about what kind of company you want to work for, think about it in terms of not merely working for an employer but working with a company n that you really want to form a connection with that’s about more than just getting paid for going into the office every day.
1. Think about what you want to achieve
What you want to achieve in your professional life will influence the type of company / employer you want to work with.
2. Have a plan
Planning the career path you want to take can give you great insight into which employers you want to work with in order to facilitate this flight path through your professional life.
3. Choose a sector
Deciding what kind of sector you want to be involved in will help you narrow down your options when it comes to identifying employers you want to work for.
4. Know yourself
By getting to know yourself better you’ll be in a better position to judge what kind of business would be a good fit for you. Identify what your key strengths are. What are you really good at? What do you enjoy that you are also good at? What skills have you learnt? What are you naturally inclined to do and be the best at?
5. Take the long-term view
Take a long-term view of what you want to do. Think about the kind of company you may want to be working with for the next 5, 10, 20 years.
6. Set some boundaries
Know what you want and what you do not want. What are you willing to be flexible about and what are you not? Having clear boundaries will really help you work out what organisation would be a good employer for you and which ones will not.

Taking control of your long-term career may involve deciding you want to be with your next employer for a certain amount of time before going off to do something else. Think about what kind of employer it’s worth spending the next x amount of years with in the context of what you want to do after that.

Even if you have a set plan, it’s a good idea to go with the flow to a certain extent and look out for suitable opportunities as they come along. If a particular job vacancy or project catches your eye, research the organisation and ask yourself if you could see yourself there.

For a long time it’s been known that people join and stay with organisations because of the quality of people they work with, the projects they’re working on and the rate at which they’re growing and learning. Take these three key things into account when identifying a company you really want to work for.
10. Use your network
Learn how to harness your network effectively. Most people in your contacts book will have strong opinions on which organisations are good to work for, both through their own personal experience and through what they’ve heard from their own contacts. The people in your network who know you really well will also be able to advise you on what type of companies would suit you in particular.
