Teaching jobs in Ghana are opening up fast this term. Basic schools reopened Tuesday, September 8, 2026, for the 2026/2027 academic year, and for many, that meant a shortage of licensed teachers to fill classrooms. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu told Parliament in June 2026 that Ghana needs between 50,000 and 90,000 more teachers, against government clearance to recruit only 7,000 this year.

This guide covers what schools must check before hiring you, which roles; teaching and non-teaching – are open, and how to apply fast.

Why This Hiring Season Works in Your Favour

  • Private schools are competing with GES for the same licensed teachers – real leverage for you if you’re qualified.
  • A government-backed placement of 50,000+ trained teachers to private schools may be coming, but details aren’t final – keep applying directly rather than waiting on it.
  • First term runs September 8 to December 17, 2026, with a mid-term break on November 5-6. Most hiring happens before that break, so the next few weeks matter most.

What You Need to Qualify

Private basic and senior high schools are legally required to employ licensed teachers (Pre-Tertiary Education Act, 2020 / Act 1049, Section 38(3)(b)) – tied to the school’s own operating license, which makes your license status the single biggest factor in getting hired.

Licensing runs through the National Teaching Council (NTC) via the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) and the Licensed Teacher Register schools use to verify you. Already licensed? Keep your register details current. Not yet licensed? Confirm your GTLE eligibility and exam date with the NTC – schools favor candidates who are licensed or actively sitting the exam.

Note: NaSIA handles school-level licensing, not teacher qualification – for license questions, go straight to the NTC.

It’s Not Just Teaching Jobs

Reopening week also exposes non-teaching gaps as enrollment grows. Here’s what’s commonly short-staffed:

School vacancies in Ghana

If you have experience in these areas, don’t rule out schools – they’re hiring fast, often with less competition than teaching roles.

How to Find These Roles Fast

  • Search Jobberman’s Research, Teaching & Training category for active vacancies across Ghana.
  • Set up job alerts so you apply within hours of a posting, not days.
  • Keep your profile complete – qualifications, NTC license status, subject area, location – so schools searching directly can find you.

The national teacher shortage making headlines this term isn’t going away overnight – but for qualified, licensed candidates, it means schools across Ghana are hiring faster and more urgently than usual. The next eight weeks, before mid-term break, are when that urgency is highest.
