THE ROLE

Senior Disability Practice Adviser

The Senior Disability Practice Adviser is a key support for the division's Principal Disability Practice Advisor (PDPA) in guiding practice, and coordinating and monitoring activities, that support the care of children with complex disability who require additional mainstream supports to sustain their care in the family home, or who are residing outside the family home. The position also plays a lead role in working with Child Protection and Family Services to drive improved outcomes for children with a disability and collaboratively address gaps in disability and mainstream service systems. Prevention of family breakdown is a key function of the role, and will require that the incumbent leads stakeholder discussions, case conferencing and other multidisciplinary meetings in relation to children with complex disability.

The role requires high level stakeholder relationship management, including a strong interface with mainstream services and the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), as well as direct engagement with the families of children with a disability.

Accountabilities Include

  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to provide a coordinated response to children and young people with a disability at risk of, or requiring, supports outside the family home; working with service providers and families to ensure the best interests of the child are addressed through their care arrangements.
  • Support the establishment of accommodation arrangements for children and young people who are unable to live in the family home due to their complex disability needs, including monitoring and oversight of the board and lodging arrangements in accordance with relevant policy and operating frameworks for children and young people with a disability.
  • Provide mainstream case coordination support, according to individual circumstances, to ensure children and young people in care arrangements can either return to living with their families or smoothly transition into adult services which meet their long-term needs.
