Job Summary

  • To build, develop, and lead an effective team capable of delivering industry leading practices within the mining operations in order to achieve business objectives/targets
  • Set up the underground mine (systems, processes, procedures, Alliance Management, etc.) to provide the foundation for an efficient mechanised mining operation


Job Description

  • Develop strategies to optimize the performance of the underground mining operation, including the adoption of innovative equipment, technology and work methods
  • Review and advise on the scope of work developed as project charters (by the Manager: Strategic Planning) for future underground mining areas
  • Build organisational capability (people & organisational structure, personnel, and contractors) to successfully deliver the Geology Department budget and Life of Mine plan
  • Review the Mine Plans to establish and maintain processes to ensure the development of optimised short term, medium and long terms plans that ensure delivery of the budget requirements and the operations strategy
  • Manage the Mining Contractors to ensure that Mining Contractors perform work to appropriate standards
  • Ensure contractors set targets and plan to deliver on the Obuasi Mine Plan and strive to exceed the plan
  • Responsible for the authorization of the monthly progress claim for the mining contractors
  • Ensure there is a culture of best for project from both client and contractor to ensure the best outcomes from the mine
  • Develop the annual budget for the mine with monthly periods and 5% annual accuracy for the next two calendar years with annual budget thereafter and accuracy commensurate with the confidence of the reserve or resource for the full asset life
  • Deliver the annual mining budget, to achieve targets in terms of the defined production physicals, unit costs and operating costs.
  • Ensure that the use of all resources are optimised to ensure delivery of the plan
  • Deliver the annual mining budget, prioritizing on the budget parameters (physical outputs, time or cost) that drive the greatest value to the operation
  • Produce a monthly budget report, including analysis of physical, time and cost variances, identifying root causes and actions to ameliorate negative variances and capitalize on opportunities
  • Develop systems for the mining department work, integrating processes managed at the superintendent level to provide effective planning of work, efficient and safe work practices, and monitoring
  • Plan and execute drilling and geological data acquisition programs, to create mining and geometallugical models of resources, reserves and grade control inventories, reconciling the performance of the models progression from resource to grade control and against processing plant performance
  • Monitoring the performance of contractors, identifying opportunities for improvement spanning planning, equipment selection and performance, contractor’s organisational design, productivities, production reporting systems, continuous improvement and contract management
  • Drive value creation across the mining department by implementing continuous improvement in line with Operational Excellence
  • Identify areas for improvement in operational blueprints (systems, processes, procedures & tasks) to ensure adherence to plan, reduce variation and maximise cost effective utilisation
  • Establish and maintain systems for identifying opportunities to drive operational excellence
  • Motivate and inspire mining personnel, creating a culture of continuous improvement
  • Actively engage in the operational excellence program, identifying opportunities to create value
  • Implement Time Usage tracking mechanisms; adopting short interval control principles to drive team culture and productivity at shift to weekly intervals
  • Analyse time usage to identify efficiency and productivity improvements
  • Develop P500 and 90 day improvement plans, tracking progress against plan schedule and outcomes
  • Provide a safe work environment, implement and deliver compliance with SHE&C plans, management systems and processes within the mine
  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with colleagues, business partners, regulators, government and other stakeholders, utilising these relationships to successfully resolve issues if, or when, they arise
  • Accountable for applying the Managerial Leadership practices that embody the company values


Qualification and Requirements

  • BSc Mining / Engineering Degree or equivalent, or equivalent operational experience
  • Preferably applicable business qualification (e.g. MBA)
  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years' operational experience within an underground mining environment of which at least three (3) years is at senior management level

Legal requirements

  • Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency or equivalent, as required by the Minerals Commission (Chief Inspector of Mines)

Functional Competencies

  • Sound understanding of the mining value and risk drivers in the business unit 

Technical Competencies

  • Broad range of leadership, managerial and technical skills relevant to large scale bulk and semi selective underground mining
  • Management of a mining contractor and more generally contractor management in an UG setting
  • Experience in Project Management
  • Conflict management
  • Demonstrate detailed knowledge in the mining operations value chain
  • Demonstrated capacity to interpret data and successfully action sound tactical decisions
  • Commercial acumen relevant to the role
  • Familiar with Mining Software
