Basic schools reopened Tuesday, September 8, 2026, for the 2026/2027 academic year, and for many, that meant a shortage of licensed teachers to fill classrooms. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu told Parliament in June 2026 that Ghana needs between 50,000 and 90,000 more teachers, against government clearance to recruit only 7,000 this year.

This guide covers what schools must check before hiring you, which roles; teaching and non-teaching – are open, and how to apply fast.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Why This Hiring Season Works in Your Favour

What You Need to Qualify

It’s Not Just Teaching Jobs

How to Find These Roles Fast

Why This Hiring Season Works in Your Favour

Private schools are competing with GES for the same licensed teachers – real leverage for you if you’re qualified.

A government-backed placement of 50,000+ trained teachers to private schools may be coming, but details aren’t final – keep applying directly rather than waiting on it.

First term runs September 8 to December 17, 2026, with a mid-term break on November 5-6.
