She had fasted, and fortunately, a friend spotted the job posting on Jobberman. She applied, and as fate or answered prayers would have it, she landed the role at Nsoroma Logistics.

For her entire probation period at Nsoroma Logistics, Abiba went above and beyond to prove herself. Even when she wasn’t asked to clean, she did. She barely even touched her phone during work hours. When Kelvin, the Graphic Designer, once spilled his tea on the kitchen floor, Abiba was there in a split second to clean it up. When Kelvin apologised, she warmly reassured him: “Oh, no worries. It’s my job.” She was polite to everyone, right down to the delivery guys. It felt as though if ants had asked her for help, she would have happily obliged.

Unsurprisingly, Abiba was praised by everyone in the office. The CEO even commended her publicly during the last Townhall meeting in front of all the Executive Committee members. That was praise on a whole other level. She was checking every box and staying in everyone’s good graces until right after her probation, when things started changing. You know how it goes: now, she has become “family.”

<a class="article-body-links"href="https://www.jobberman.com.gh/discover/9-best-practices-to-successfully-complete-your-probation-period">Abiba’s attitude started going downhill a few months after her probation. Sedudzi, the delivery guy, was coming through the reception carrying the team’s lunch when the electric door slammed into him. Food scattered everywhere. The soup packs spilled oil onto the floor, so after sorting out the undamaged meals, he naturally went to get Abiba to clean up the mess. After all, that was her job. But when he approached her, Abiba just hissed and snapped in Twi: “Mo nso koraa! When you were coming in, didn’t you see where you were going? Ah! Mtcheew!” Stunned, Sedudzi could only stare at her as she walked off.

On another occasion, Enyonam, the Community Manager, was collaborating with the creative team on a video shoot. As they were clearing the space for the shoot, they accidentally shattered the glass tabletop. Enyonam went looking for Abiba to help clean up the broken glass. Unable to find her, she left a message with the receptionist. Two hours passed, and nothing had been done. Enyonam eventually decided to look for a broom and dustpan to clean it up herself.

As it turned out, when the receptionist had informed Abiba about the accident, Abiba simply replied: “Ah, so if the table broke, why are you calling me?” The receptionist clarified that the glass was all over the floor, but Abiba just chuckled and walked away. By the end of the workday, Abiba hadn’t even bothered to check on the situation as she had already packed up and gone home. She had officially “grown wings.” The only people she listened to without complaining when asked to do the very job she once prayed for were the CEO, the Finance Manager, and the Head of Marketing; nobody else.

Eventually, everyone began to notice the shift. During lunch, if something spilled on the floor, colleagues would tell each other: “Don’t bother calling Abiba. She won’t do it. Just clean it yourself.” How had she become this way?

When the performance <a class="article-body-links"href="https://www.jobberman.com.gh/discover/7-ways-to-utilise-performance-review">review cycle arrived, the feedback was overwhelmingly negative. Hardly anyone had a good word to say about her work ethic. Surprisingly, Abiba refused to accept the feedback and grew defensive. Instead of taking responsibility for her shortcomings, she began wearing a permanent frown, acting angry, and going about her duties as if she were at loggerheads with the entire team.

The HR Manager had to sit her down one day and advise her… “Abiba, I know how hard you worked when you first joined us and how much we all appreciated your dedication. But I want you to remember that consistency is just as important as a strong start. In any job, it’s natural to feel more comfortable over time, but we have to make sure we don’t lose the same enthusiasm and professionalism we started with.

Your work matters, not just to the company but to everyone who interacts with you. When you approach your tasks with a positive attitude, it lifts the entire team. On the other hand, when you let frustration show or stop taking initiative, people notice that too.

If you ever feel overwhelmed or unappreciated, please talk to me or your manager. We’re here to support each other. I hope you’ll see this as a chance to refocus and bring back that spark you had when you started. It’s never too late to rebuild trust and show everyone the real Abiba.”

Lesson:

Consistency over Comfort: Becoming “family” at work is no reason to let standards drop. Professionalism shouldn’t fade once job security feels established.

Every Role Has Impact: No position is minor; a positive attitude in any job lifts the entire team, just as a negative attitude creates friction for everyone.

Feedback is an Opportunity, Not an Attack: When performance reviews highlight blind spots, defensiveness only closes doors. Growth requires the willingness to listen, reflect, and reset.

Abiba prayed for her job and spent her first six months outshining everyone.
