In times of crises, there is an abrupt change in the manner organizations run their business and more importantly how their workforce is managed.

Challenging periods like the COVID 19 pandemic affects the entire workforce and their productivity. While the pandemic has contributed to a rise in unemployment, there is a surge in business for some companies. Such companies may tend to need additional workforce and may be wondering whether to hire or not to hire.

To arrive at a final decision to hire or not to hire new employees depends on several factors. Here is what to do when you are at a crossroad.

Have an Evaluation Framework

Workforce planning is the process of analyzing the current workforce and identifying the gaps between the present and the future. This informs the business and the specific implementation solutions to adopt that the company can align on to achieve it’s business goals. One key fact about workforce planning is that it should be very strategic and in line with the business objectives

As an employer consider these questions:

  1. What are the current workforce and projections in trends?
  2. What are the organizations current and future work requirements /demands?
  3. What are the gaps between workforce demand and supply?
  4. What solutions does your organization need to meet the strategic goals?

When these are answered it gives you an idea of what specific skills are needed to aid the growth of the business and it determines whether to hire or not to hire in times of challenges.

In times of crises like novel corona-virus pandemic, key roles must be considered over the other. For instance, sectors that are classified to provide essential services calls for extra hands to facilitate their work. However, if your organization does not fall within the essential services chances are that you may have to reconsider the need for the role before you finalize on hiring.

In the situation that you intend to hire, always make sure a concrete decision is made and most importantly make it a point to look into the future to clearly define the urgency of this role and its importance to the company or business. Putting all these into consideration saves the business time and money. In that, you can critically test for the best candidate with the right skills and the right frame of mind who will help drive the objectives of the business to success.
