Odd Interview Questions And How To Answer Them

For most people, an interview prep entails a lot of reading on the job role, industry practices, trends and standards. Essentially, job interviews are meant to assess the candidate’s readiness for the vacant position. So what does a candidate do when in the middle of an interview that is going so well, panellists throw in odd interview questions? What are some of these unusual interview questions that other candidates have been asked, and why do interviewers ask these questions?

How lucky are you and why?

Odd interview questions are meant to make you think on your feet because you probably have answers to all the job-related questions anyway. You do not necessarily have to provide a correct answer to this question about luck because there are no wrong answers. You can give a tongue-in-cheek response about being lucky enough to get the job you are interviewing for.

Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer

Interviewers use such questions to assess how well you respond to an unexpected question or scenario. These questions have no right or wrong answers but they present a candidate the opportunity to show wit, creativity,  and a sense of humour. Depending on the job position you’re applying for, decide which option fits and pick one. If you are going for a Sales, Marketing or related role, you are more of a hunter.

If you were on an island and could only bring three things, what would you bring?

Buy some time. This is a good time to slowly sip on a bottle of water or smile at the question. It is fine to look like the question took you by surprise, because that was what it was meant to do. You can also buy some time by asking for 5 seconds to come up with a list. While buying time, you can make a quip about how modern living has saddled us with a lot of necessities, which is why the list is hard to make. Do not take too much time before answering.

If someone you loved was killed in front of you, but someone created a copy of them that was perfect right down to the atomic level, would they be the same person and would you love them just as much?

Keep your cool. If you are asked a question that takes the wind out of your sail, first take a deep breath. Keep your composure and don’t avoid the interviewer’s gaze. It is important to appear calm and confident, even if you don’t feel that way. Unless you are required to explain your answer, give a simple ‘’yes’’ or ‘’no’’ response and keep it moving. The panel may not require a philosophical treatise on components of personhood so do not box yourself into a tight corner.

Tell me a joke

Show your personality. It can be quite off-putting to prepare fastidiously for an interview only to be asked to tell a joke. But such is the nature of odd interview questions, so instead of treating the question as some annoyance, consider it an excellent opportunity to show off your quick wit and have fun. When in doubt, pick a short joke or a pun. Make sure to tell a joke that will not be considered inappropriate by the panel.

Is it possible to live a normal life and not ever tell a lie?

Trying to impress might go wrong. This is quite the tricky question and trying to seem morally pious can backfire on you. When asked a question pertaining to morality, it is okay to admit that you are not perfect. Even though these questions seem general, there is a possibility of a follow-up question about your personal response and lying that you can never tell a lie is… pretty awkward.

Where do you draw the line between art and not art?

Think about the vacant position. Keep in mind that some of these odd interview questions are aimed at determining your knowledge of the job field. Answer them in a way that demonstrates your knowledge of the field and also your appreciation of modern industry advancements, setbacks and pain points. A question like this is probably drawing from news or a trending topic, and you are at liberty to engage the panel with current and relevant references

Describe a situation you should have handled differently

Come Back to it Later. A question like this requires quite a bit of thought because what you say can make or unmake you, as far as the interview is concerned. If your mind is blank after a few seconds, ask for time to think about it and come up with a scenario that doesn’t ruin your chances of getting the job. Whatever situation you decide to share should reflect that you’ve grown and learnt to do better.
